Practical Information
Vuonnamárkanat is a sales market that takes place annually on the last Saturday in August. In 2026, the market will be held on August 29.
In 2005, the first modern Vuonnamárkanat was held in the outdoor area of the Varanger Sami Museum. One of the pillars is a clear Sami profile; Vuonnamárkanat should be a Sami meeting place, an arena where it should be natural to speak Sami, to see Sami text and to wear a gakti. Focus on language and encouragement to wear a gakti are central elements of the market. To encourage the use of gákti, a gákti raffle is held every year, where anyone who wears a gákti can sign up and be entered into the raffle for cash prizes. Sellers are encouraged to use both Sami and Norwegian when advertising their products. This is part of the strengthening and revitalization of the Sami language and culture.
Tickets
Adults over 16 years of age NOK 100.
Tickets are sold at the gate from 10:00.
Gákti raffle
Anyone wearing a gákti can register for the Isak Saba Center’s gákti raffle! They have their own booth under the market where registration takes place from the start of the market until the end, when the prizes are drawn.
There is a cash prize raffle among those registered. The first prize is 10,000 kroner! This is part of getting more people to wear gákti – so run home and find your gákti!
