For vendors

Vuonnamárkanat is a sales market that takes place annually on the last Saturday in August. In 2026, the market will be held on 29. August.

In 2005, the first modern Vuonnamárkanat was organized in the outdoor area of the Varanger Sami Museum. One of the pillars is a clear Sami profile; Utkumárkanat will be a Sami meeting place, an arena where it should be natural to speak Sami, to see Sami text and to wear a gákti. A focus on language and an invitation to use the gákti are key elements of the market.

To encourage the use of gákti, a gákti raffle is organized every year, where anyone who wears a gákti can sign up and take part in the raffle for cash prizes. Sellers are encouraged to use both Sami and Norwegian when advertising their products. This is part of the strengthening and revitalization of Sami language and culture.

Furthermore, there is a desire to establish a local, regional and international meeting place for the continuation of cultural values and the strengthening of local and regional Sami identity behind the establishment of the modern Vuonnamárkanat. To register, please contact vsm-info@dvmv.no

Guidelines for product selection

The market has a clear Sami profile and only sells handmade/homemade products and food, such as crafts of various kinds, wood products, leather products, clothing and accessories, locally sourced food, organic products, this year’s berries, potatoes, mushrooms, and the like. There is no opportunity to sell mass-produced goods, set up advertising/promotional stands or conduct political election campaigns and the like in the market area.

NB! The products do not have to be Sami even if the market is Sami!

Distribution of stalls

The market manager distributes stalls and decides who gets a place according to the following principle: 1/3 professional craftsmen, 1/3 hobbyists/local products, 1/3 food. Demanded and popular items will be prioritized.

There are many people on the market, and we cannot guarantee that everyone will get a place, or the place they want, but we can guarantee that we will go as far as possible to ensure that as many as possible can participate. If many sellers apply to sell the same product, the Vuonnamárkanat committee will make a selection. The committee is sovereign and does not need to justify its decision. All sellers pay a participation fee and visitors pay an entrance fee to the market (NOK 100 per adult, free for children under 16). The participation fee and entrance fee help finance the market.
